Subject: Updated Vocabulary Harmonization Proposal for ObservationMethod

Dear Experts

Please accept the usual apology due to those of who got multiple copies of this message.

I am attaching an expanded proposal for additions and changes to the ObservationMethod domain within the HL7 RIM. This proposal is based on discussions between representatives of the National Center for Infectious Diseases and Theradoc Corporation in the context of implementing HL7 V3 messaging to support reporting antibiotics susceptibility results. We started from the perspective of trying to ensure that existing observation methods could be passed for these tests you may have seen a far more modest proposal that seeks to add a couple of more general observation methods to the current HL7 list.

This current proposal goes a bit further based on work that Robert Hausam Theradoc has done to review the current set of relevant observation methods supported by LOINC. We have also, based on discussion here, determined the need for some additional concepts beyond those covered under LOINC today. I am also attaching a spreadsheet that Robert created as part of this process, since it has interesting and relevant content that goes a bit beyond the scope of the proposal on the table.

Also, as a general matter (I do not know how to put this in the form of a RIM harmonization proposal), our discussions led us to the position that it would be good if HL7 could follow LOINCs lead, and strive to support the same methods as supported by LOINC. We also felt that, when new methods were discovered, they should be proposed to both organizations.
